Coy Tapley: Optical zoom is the range afforded by the lens optics and is the best indicator of overall quality.Digital zoom simply crops the total number of pixels and makes the remaining ones bigger. The more you use digital zoom, the poorer the image quality becomes because fewer and fewer pixels are used to make the image. This function is cheap because of the nature of the electronics. Good optics to allow for better zoom lens are spendy, but worth it....Show more
Florencio Dingle: Optical zoom means moving the lenses around to get a closer look at the subject.Digital zoom is a cheat - it just throws away the edges fo the picture and shows only the middle. That sounds like it might be OK, but of course if you're using a 3x ditigal zoom you're throwing away 8/9ths of your data leaving the result too crabby to be further enlarged.
Shaquita Wernicki: Digital will let you zoom in a lot more than optical zoom but digital has a shitty picture and optical has a ! crystal clear pic.
Betsey Muehlbach: Optical zoom IS what you want. Digital zoom IS NOT worth anything! Digital zoom is the same you computer does when you zoom in on the screen -- it will result in a very pixellated image. Optical zoom is exactly what it says. It uses the optics of the lens or lenses to zoom in on the subject. The camera sees this zoomed image and the digital image is saved as you see it. With either zoom the bigger the number, the closer you zoom in to the subject. The more you zoom with an optical lens the shakier the image will become, so use of a tripod is highly recommended for more than a 2-3x. A 4x zoom might mean that it is equivalent to a conventional film camera with a 40-165 zoom lens (but the actual equivalence will depend on the basic lens of the camera). Let me repeat: DO NOT USE THE DIGITAL ZOOM. It is a worthless feature that some manufacturers or sales people use to hype the camera's ability. It has no value in photography....Show mo! re
