Guild Wars 2 Crafting Tips?

Ambrose Mumma: It actually doesn't take that much money, if you're willing to do a bit of gathering yourself. You will need a LOT of wood/metal/leather/cloth (depending on which crafting profession you do), so be prepared to either spend money on buying raw materials from the TP, or spend quite a while gathering materials. Your first choice, of course, is which profession(s) to do. Some notes on them:1) There are the three Armor professions (Tailor, Leatherworker, Armorsmith). Each uses cloth and either leather or metal. They also use fine crafting materials (teeth, blood, scales, etc.).2) There are the three Weapon professions (Weaponsmith, Huntsman, Artificer). Each uses Wood, Metal, possibly Leather, and fine crafting materials.3) Finally, there are the two odd professions (Cooking and Jeweler). Cooking uses its own vast set of ingredients, and jeweler uses gemstones.4) Cooking is by far the cheapest, but the ingredients are hard to come buy, and the finished products ! won't sell for much. 5) Assuming you've saved your jewels, Jeweler is probably the next cheapest, and is a good start. 6) The remaining 6 are slightly more expensive, mainly because they all share at least some materials (i.e., the fine crafting materials), and thus getting supplies for them can be costly. So which do you pick? Well, it takes about 1-3g (in my opinion!) to level a crafting discipline, assuming you're not TOO opposed to occasionally buying stuff from the TP. So if you're not hurting for money, you should probably level one that your character can use. So if you're a dagger wielding necro (which you should be, because necros are awesome), you'd wanna level Weaponsmith. Once you've started, what do you craft? Basically, each item is comprised of two or more base items that you combine. When you first begin, you'll have relatively few, low level items. To level up, you basically craft and discover recipes via the "discovery" tab. The general rule of thumb is tha! t you should NEVER craft a weapon you already "know". For exam! ple, in the regular "craft" tab, if Berserker's Mithril Axe is already listed, don't craft another one. You get far more xp for discovering and crafting new recipes. Your next rule is that you should generally find the CHEAPEST item, in terms of resources, to craft. For example, let's say you're doing armorsmith. You've gotten your crafting level to 75, and you're ready to start on the second "tier" of crafted armor (iron). You make a pillaging insignia, and now you have to discover which armor piece you want to "discover". You want to use the "discovery" tab to craft a new item (and thus get maximum xp as per above). But what do you craft? A pair of boots, or a coat (we'll limit it to these two options now for simplicity)? Well, iron boots cost 2 iron, 2 wool, and 1 spool of wool thread, whereas a coat costs 4 iron, 3 wool, and 2 spools of wool thread. So you're better off crafting the boots. Final tip: Check the price on each item you craft on the TP. If it's worth more t! han, say, 1-2s, go ahead and sell it. If it isn't, salvage it and re-use the materials....Show more

Donnell Mollo: Crafting is a bit of a money pit. Not necessarily because it is expensive, but because the markets are so flooded with goods you have to be *really* high skilled to make any money at all. Basically until you hit the 300+ region on your skill you would probably be able to buy the item from the TP cheaper than you could make it - unless you gather your own materials.Assuming you have a ton of materials however, it is a good way to get some early levels. Each craft has it's ups and downs. 1. All the armor crafts require two different sources of material, at least one of which is drop-only, which makes it harder to gather. In fact for all but Heavy Armor, you can only gather your material through drops or salvaging.2. The weapon crafts require the contents of two different node types. Honestly these are the easiest to gather material for.3. Jewel cra! fting requires materials from one type of node, but one of the requirem! ents are only acquired rarely through the node.4. Cooking is strange. It has materials that must be bought with gold, materials that must be harvested from plant nodes, materials that are rarely dropped from tree nodes, and materials that must be bought from prestige vendors. On top of that, the items from prestige vendors are account bound, meaning they can't be gotten from the TP. On the other hand due to a rather long list of recipes, it is pretty easy to level cooking as long as you have enough materials.Note that in a lot of cases it is cheaper to buy the intermediate steps of a recipe than the base materials. (IE a Wool Vestments Lining and a Wool Vestments Panel might well cost you less than the Wool, Thin Leather, and Spool of Wool Thread needed to make them.)...Show more
