How do you know whether to use CONSERVATION OF MOMENTUM or CONSERVATION OF KINETIC ENERGY when solving for the?

Evelin Turlich: a million. Momentum of a device is conserved, on condition that the collisions are elastic. 2. The capability of a device isn't conserved, whether all collisions are elastic. capability is lost as warmth, case in point. consequently, use Conservation of Momentum.

Carter Dewater: Sometimes you have to use both, if you have more unknowns. You need to use as many equations as you have unknowns. If you only need to use one of the equations, you can use whichever one you find easiest.

Cecil Derenzi: momentum conservation is a sure shot thing i.e. is always true both in elastic and inelastic collisionsin case of elastic collisions you can use any of the 2 equations to solve for the variablesbut be notified that momentum equation is a vector equation and proper sign convention must be used whereas Kinetic energy equation is a scalar equation and its value is always positive .In your case any of the 2 equations would give you correct resultsplease rate ! my answer the best...Show more
