Eva Lichlyter: An ecosystem is defined as the all the living and non-living components of a natural community. Non-living or abiotic factors include light, temperature, water, etc. Living factors are the organisms, the bacteria, fungi, plants, and animals within the community. For example, let's consider a pond. The pond is filled with freshwater, it's stagnant and there is little oxygen in the water, there are large rocks at the bottom, and it's warm. These are abiotic components of the environment. In the pond there are tiny floating animals and insects skimming the surface. Algae grow on the rocks.
