Coleman Coscia: Well, there's a whole lot more demand for ESOL teachers than for regular English teachers. At my school, the teacher licensure courses for ESL are offered through the applied linguistics degree, so you can easily take both. But check the licensure requirements for you stat at the state department of education website.
Dorethea Beaston: That is exactly what I did!I'm not sorry but I have learned to realize that I will never have much money. I've had a lot of adventures, met a lot of people and understand a smattering of 6 languages. I love language and English.However, if you want something similar to that, let me suggest Speech Pathology. I wish I had my degree in that instead. It is so similar and many people in Speech Path will be taking linguistics classes with you as the studies overlap a great deal. Speech Pathology pays a LOT more and if education goes down the tubes (as it is these days) you can always work at a hospital or even hang out! your own "shingle" after you get your Master's.You'll have more choices with Speech Path than you will with linguistics.Another thing I would do is instead of getting a degree in English, get a degree in Liberal Arts...May I recommend St. John's College in Santa Fe, NM. I wish I had gone there and approached my English degree with a critical thinking, Socratic method rather than just memorizing a lot of literature and authors. Take a few education classes when you graduate if you're sure you want to go into education but you won't be locked into teaching if you diversify your knowledge.I don't recommend young people lock themselves into education because the average person only lasts in the classroom about three years and then throw in the towel. It isn't as glamorous as it looks from the student desk so try to give your self an out if you find you need it.Speech Pathology and good critical thinking skills will get you almost any where you decide to go.Just thought of s! omething else. Are you good at accounting and Economics? If y! ou can handle those types of classes as well as your language classes, I would strongly recommend International Business. You can work and study in China or somewhere overseas and get paid the big bucks and earn a lot more respect than you would as a teacher at some high school. I hated accounting and economics but tried it out for two years anyway. I wish I could have stuck to that but I was so much more interested in language than in math so I did what I did. Maybe you are better at business than I was but I only made C's in those classes and struggled to get that. I slipped through English and Linguistics with all A's and it just felt more rewarding to me because I like people more than account ledgers.If you're cut out for it, that's the jackpot!!!...Show more
